St. Bernadette Parish to Erect Church Building

Michael Clancy – The Arizona Republic

A Catholic parish in northeast Phoenix has announced plans to put up a new church building.

To be built as planned, the church will need a zoning variance for the roof peak to reach 65 feet. Normal limits in that neighborhood are 36 feet. Wendy Riddell, a zoning attorney, said she would apply for the additional height probably in early February. A fundraising campaign would follow approval of the variance.

Susan Bitter Smith, who works on zoning issues with Riddell’s law firm, Berry & Damore, said neighborhood response has been positive.
